Krista is the creator of the brand ‘TABAKA’ – a brand that provides high quality clothing for young teenage girls and stylish urban women. Her signature designs are loose knee-long dresses, silk blouses, shorts and a dark blue colour throughout.
Krista grew up in a small village where as a child she spent a lot of time by herself. Apart from making a faraway distance to the local school every day, she spent most of her time reading books and sewing. Since then sewing has become part of her life and everything she knows up till now was learnt from her grandmother – a person who Krista admires so dearly. After trying her luck in modelling, studying visual style & make-up and working in marketing, Krista understood that creating clothes for others is what she loves the most so three years ago she made her first step and presented herself as a fashion designer.
Her first collection ‘Girl With a Wish’ was a result of an emotional turning point in her life that she interpreted in untraditional dark outfits for children. Now she focuses more on young girls and women saying ‘Girls who follow me and compliment me – they see part of themselves in my work, they are a similar type. It really delights me, I feel like I am not alone’.
Krista also introduces us how she makes her collections ‘I draw a sketch and then go to see my budding sewers. We discuss what is the best way to cut the material, how it will fall on the body etc. We sew around 10 samples of the scetch and then decide what material will fit this model the best. We use sample materials first and decide the final one only after. It is a longer process but it is more enjoyable this way’. Krista acknowledges that quality and simplicity is what she values and she wants her work to be long lasting.
As the most powerful inspiration for her designs Krista sees women. Especially she admires French women – their occasional rudeness and ignorance interflowed with glamour and charisma at the same time. French movies, culture and cuisine is another passion of Krista and her dream is to spend some time in France in the future. She also adores Alexander Wang and John Galliano but from Latvian designers she likes a bit of each creative designer.
Now Krista is working on two new collections, is planning to go to fabrics and textiles exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany and is in the process of improving her brand’s website. We wish every success for Krista as we are sure that her talent and skills have a lot of potential and growth in the future.
